What is a Spirometer?

Spirometry is the measure of lung function, or in simple terms, it is a measure of how well your lungs work. It measures the volume and speed of air that can be breathed in and out. A device called a Spirometer is used to measure the inhalation and exhalation of air. This information can then be used to create a pneumotachograph, which is useful in assessing conditions that affect lung function, such as asthma, lung disease, and cystic fibrosis.

A Spirometer is a device with an attached mouthpiece that you blow into. The device then records the results. Small portable spirometers are available and will often be used in doctor's surgeries. More complex devices can be found in hospitals where more detailed readings can be taken.
The use of a Spirometer is a very common test of lung function and will probably be used if you go to your GP with any chest or lung symptoms. It can be used to assist in the diagnosis of illnesses like asthma, to monitor breathing issues, for example with lung disease, and also to monitor how effective any treatments are.

A spirometer is medical testing equipment often used to measure and analyze the functions of the lung. This plastic device helps to measure the amount of air a person can hold in his lungs. It also measures how well a patient moves air in and out of his respiratory system. Typically, people who are suspected of having symptoms associated with pulmonary disease are often tested using the spirometer. Spirometers are also used to diagnose other lung diseases including asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. Furthermore, the equipment is used to determine the effectiveness of certain medications prescribed for pulmonary disease.

The incentive spirometer goals are:
  • Detection of pulmonary disease: The spirometer can be used to detect most lung diseases. Lung problems often cause the capacity of the lung to diminish with the passage of time. The device helps doctors and patients to monitor the progress of the disease when it begins to manifest. As part of the therapy, it is important to prescribe a base line. Therefore, when the patient experiences a sudden decrease in lung volume, this is a strong indication something is wrong.

  • Optimized lung inflation: Inflation can prove beneficial to your lungs. When you have larger lungs, clean air will succeed in getting to every part of your lungs. This makes it possible for oxygen to find its way into the bloodstream more effectively.
